Intex Challenger K1 Inflatable Kayak Review

Many first time inflatable kayak users are hesitant to spend alot of money on their first one. After all, how do you know if you’ll like it? How do you know if an inflatable model will last and give you the value you are looking for?

Because of these considerations, many first-timers opt for an inexpensive (i.e. cheap) model to start with. One of the best and most inexpensive inflatable kayaks that you’ll find is the Intex Challenger K1 Inflatable Kayak.

Product Specs

The Challenger is designed for lakes and slow moving rivers. It has a low profile design, so don’t plan on taking it into white water rapids or strong ocean currents. The kayak itself has a streamlined design and the inflatable seat is built for only one passenger. The strong vinyl covering is suprisingly strong – a feature you would find on much more expensive inflatable crafts.

The Intex Challenger comes with a paddle, inflatable seat and foot rest, pump, carrying case and a patch kit. The paddle seems a little awkward, so you might want to shop around to find a paddle that suits your taste, rather than rely on the one that comes with the Challenger.

Rather than use the pump that is supplied with the K1, use an electric pump, but be very careful of overinflating. Use common sense when inflating, and adjust accordingly. Overinflating could cause seams to burst – not a good thing for an inflatable kayak.

Tracking and Handling

Don’t expect the Intex Challenger K1 to track like a $500 model. It won’t, but for calm lakes and rivers you should find no problem with how the craft handles. Also keep in mind that much of the success of tracking depends on the person who is paddling.

This is the area where the Challenger K1 really shines. If your budget is tight, this is the inflatable kayak that will fit the bill. Plan on spending around $100 for the K1. Amazon.com has had this inflatable kayak on sale for as low as $80. That is not much more than you would spend on an inflatable toy for the backyard pool!

We give the Intex Challenger K1 a solid 4 stars – mainly for price/value. If you are new to the inflatable kayak world, the Challenger K1 is definitely worth a serious look.
